The Iron Man is about a huge metal giant who falls to Earth and starts wandering the countryside and eating everything metal. At first, the farmers are scared because he eats their machines, but a brave boy helps the Iron Man by fixing him, and they become friends.
Later, a terrifying space dragon comes to Earth and threatens to destroy everything. The Iron Man faces the dragon in a big battle and wins by tricking it. After saving the world, the Iron Man becomes a hero and protector of the land.
Our unit of work includes 5 chapters of comprehensions, each with 20 questions each. Questions vary in style and each chapter has a diverse set of questions spanning the literacy curriculum for LKS2. Our worksheets support your planning when completing whole class reading of The Iron Man book.
Chapter 1 Questions
In chapter 1, ‘The Coming of the Iron Man’ we have created a comprehension that includes multiple choice questions and single answer questions aimed at Year 3 classes.
There are 20 questions in total and they touch on a range of areas including: Spelling, punctuation, Identifying Onomatopoeia, Simile, personification and alliteration (Explanations given), Sequencing events of the story.Choose appropriate summaries to conclude chapters, making inferences using evidence as well as responding to retrieval questions.

Chapter 2 Questions
This comprehension is made up of 20 questions again linked to chapter 2 of The Iron Man, ‘The Return of the Iron Man’.
In this question set, we explore a range of literary devices and encourage your class to build on questions covered in chapter 1. We encourage them to identify the use of short sentences to create suspense, find evidence, reflect on the feelings of characters, identify incorrectly spelt words, identify missing punctuation, explore vocabulary and definitions, sequence events and more.
